Marc R. Milburn, ’67

Marc Russell Milburn, 66, born October 16, 1944 in Houston, Texas to John and Charlcy Milburn, died Sunday, December 5, 2010 in Conroe, Texas. Marc attended public schools in Houston and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from The Citadel in 1967. He then acquired two years of post-graduate study in Political Economy at the University of California in Berkeley. Marc was a student of several foreign languages – and was conversational in German, Russian and Spanish. He also had a keen interest in Latin studies. Marc began his career at First City Nat’l Bank in Houston, Tx as a Securities Analyst/Portfolio Manager. In 1971, he went to work for Seiscom-Delta Inc., as a Satellite Navigator and was responsible for the navigation of the company’s proprietary satellite navigation systems onboard its fleet of survey vessels. His duties later expanded when he joined Navigation Consulting Services Int’l in 1979 as a hydrographic surveyor. He provided radio-positioning services to geophysical contractors for offshore oil prospecting. During that time, Marc was able to travel extensively to Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, Panama, Honduras, Singapore, the Marshall Islands, Malaysia, the British Isles, Holland, Norway, Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. He could spin many a tale about his most unique adventures and travel opportunities. After twelve years of navigation work, Marc decided to relocate to Ventura, California and joined A. G. Edwards as an Investment Broker. He then worked extensively in the financial world – in California and later in the Houston area as a securities trader representing Quest Capital Strategies, Fidelity Investments and TD Ameritrade. He had a loyal clientele because of his high degree of integrity and expertise. Marc enjoyed his work, but, was happiest when at home with his beautiful collies. Marc had a huge heart for animals and worked tirelessly and faithfully for collie rescue organizations around the Houston area. He had adopted a number of collies from these organizations and took care of them at his home. Marc was a history buff and especially loved the Civil War period. His encyclopedic memory would engage others for hours with interesting and overlooked facts. He had a heart of gold, a gentle spirit and was the most faithful friend one could have. He also loved genealogy and would tirelessly search countless resources for new finds. Marc was a perpetual student of life and was intensely curious about many subjects. He was extremely well read – some of his favorites included Joyce, Beckett, Proust, Ginsberg, Kerouac, Bukowsky, Marz, Neetzsche and others which helped to fuel his highly developed sense of irony. Family was extremely important to Marc and he always strived to attend family gatherings. He was a devoted father, brother and uncle – an amazing person who will be missed greatly. Marc is survived by his brother, Brent, his wife Karin and their daughters Katharine and Elizabeth, as well as a host of Milburn relatives throughout Austin, San Antonio and Virginia. Marc’s parents, John and Charlcy Milburn, preceded him in death – as did his precious daughter, Courtenay. Marc was very blessed to have a faithful friend, Terry Dorton and Courtenay’s mother, Rose, with him during that time. A private family memorial service in celebration of Marc’s life will be held in January 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor his memory may be sent to the Houston Collie Rescue or the Texas Collie Rescue. Tags: 1967
