Former Bennettsville resident Mahlon Ethelbert Padgett III, 79, of Shalotte, N.C., died at his home on September 1, 2014.
He was the son of the late M. E. and Bonita Atkinson Padgett of Bennettsville and was born on October 29, 1934, in Sumter.
He was a graduate of Bennettsville High School in 1953 and The Citadel Class of 1957 when he received his U.S. Air Force Commission.
After completing his duty as an Air Force bomber pilot, he became an aerospace engineer with Westinghouse, where he worked until his retirement, when he relocated to Ocean Isle Beach.
Surviving are his son, Lynwood Padgett of Charlotte, NC; two grandsons, Caleb Padgett of Texas and Joshua Padgett of Massachusetts; two granddaughters, Jillian and Mariel Padgett, of Charlotte; two nieces and a nephew.
He was predeceased by his parents, a son, Mahlon E. Padgett IV; a sister, Bonita Padgett McLaurin; and his former wife, Dempsey Rowe Padgett.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, at Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville.
