LTC Maxcy Webber Rowell Sr., U.S. Army Retired, 84, husband of Iris Jean Blackmon Rowell for 62 years, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 18, 2012. Coach Rowell was born September 4, 1928 in Kingstree to the late John Horace Rowell and Essie Mae Jones Rowell. He retired as the Principal of Andrews High School and served as the football coach for eleven years. The football field is named the “Webber Rowell Stadium” in his honor. He served on the S.C. State High School Athletic League and was an Eagle Scout in Troop 329. He was an alumnus of Wofford College and the Citadel Graduate School. He served as an assistant fire chief and owned a service station for many years. He was a member served on the church board of Trinity United Methodist Church. His military career lasted over 25 years and included time as company commander and battalion commander. In retirement, he worked with his son at Andrews Nursery. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons and their wives, Rev. Maxcy and Brenda Rowell Jr., and Jim and Sara Rowell; a daughter, Karen “Cookie” Spillane and husband Mickey; a brother, Spivey Rowell; a sister-in-law, Lila Rowell; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Maxcy Rowell Jr. and Dr. Ben Gafford. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for two hours prior to the service.
