Colonel Lucian Whitaker Pinckney, widower of Milward Blamyre Deas Pinckney died on December 07, 2017 at Albuquerque, NM. Services will be private. Colonel Pinckney was born November 27, 1927 at Charleston, South Carolina, a son of Edward Hall Pinckney and Hattie Whitaker Pinckney Darby of Charleston. He was graduated from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina in 1951. Colonel Pinckney’s military career included service in the US Navy during World War II where he served in the Pacific theater and in the US Air Force as a fighter pilot in Korea in 1955-56. He also flew two tours of duty in Vietnam as a pilot and senior staff officer in 1965 and 1969-70. His awards and decorations include: The Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Vietnam, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters for combat missions flown in Vietnam, The Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, American Campaign Medal (WWII), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (WWII), World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal-Japan (WW II), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Cuba Military Merit Award-1962, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He held the highest military aeronautical rating, that of Command Pilot. Colonel Pinckney was a member of the South Carolina Society, a past member of the St. Cecilia Society, the Carolina Yacht Club, and the Sons of Colonial Wars, a member of the Order of Daedalians Military Pilots’ Fraternity, the Association of Citadel Men, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, and the Military Officers’ Association of America. Memorials may be made to the Lucian and Peter Pinckney Memorial Scholarship fund at the College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29424. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Edward H. Green of Colliersville, Tennessee, and a brother, Alfred G. Pinckney of Charleston.
