Sihvonen, 39, of 43 Bush Hill Road died unexpectedly at the home of his mother in Lisbon on Thursday morning. He was born in Norwich on May 6, 1967, son of Anja (Savilaakso) Sihvonen of Lisbon and the late Olavi N. Sihvonen. Leo was a graduate of N.F.A., class of 1985, where he captained the rifle team to its first state championship. He then went on to graduate from Mohegan Community College, with an A.S. in law enforcement in 1987 and The Citadel in Charleston, SC, where he was an expert marksman, with a B.A. in psychology in 1990. In 1999 he graduated from the P.O.S.T., State Police Academy. Mr. Sihvonen was employed as a police officer for the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health, as a member of the Connecticut Valley Hospital police force. Prior to working at C.V.H. Leo worked at Pachuag State Forest, Griswold High School and the Dept. of Children and Families. He was a member of the N.R.A., an avid outdoorsman, and loved hunting and fishing with his grandfather, father, and his sons. A devoted father, Leo loved nothing so much as his sons. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Bethann and their three sons, Holt, Wyatt, and Lucas; his three sisters and their families: Maira and Timothy Fowler of Lisbon and their children Thomas and Olivia; Tina and Greig Wells of Canterbury and their daughter Alyson; and Lisa and Paul Sihvonen-Binder of New Salem, MA; and his uncle and aunt, Arnold and Dorothy Sihvonen of Columbia. Leo also leaves his beloved hunting dog, Belle. Calling hours are at Cummings-Gagne Funeral Home, 82 Cliff Street, Norwich, CT from 3 to 5:30 p.m. , followed by a memorial service to which all are welcome. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Avalonia Land Conservancy, P.O. Box 49, Old Mystic, CT 06372-0049.
