Leland A. Mundy, ’58

Leland Armstead Mundy, 84, passed away Monday April 13, 2020 in Clermont Florida. Born January 26, 1936 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Leland Victor Pennington and Velna Gregg Mundy, he grew up in Weddington, NC, the oldest of 4 brothers; James, Walter and Gregg. Leland graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia, SC, where in his senior year he played his first year of organized football and made the South Carolina all-star team. Leland is a 1958 graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he played football and baseball. While at The Citadel in Charleston SC, Leland met Joyce Ann Peebles who was attending the nursing school at the Medical University of South Carolina who became his bride of 60 years. Immediately after graduation Leland was commissioned as an officer in the US Army. After serving in the military Leland began a distinguished career in the seafood industry. The majority of time he owned his own seafood brokerage business.

He was a Shriner, a member of the Scottish Rite, Brandon Masonic Lodge No 114 and a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Leland was a proud member of The Citadel class of 1958. Leland and Joyce loved attending annual homecomings and enjoyed lifelong relationships with his classmates. He was very proud of his Citadel legacy and that his two sons, Nat ’83 and Victor (Moose) ’86 and his grandsons, Christian ’13 and Calvin ’14 are also Citadel graduates.

Leland who was fondly called Poppa by a few and Coach by many, was a lifelong sports enthusiast. He was a gifted little league coach, touching numerous lives. He loved to watch and play golf with his friends. His favorite teams were the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons (charter season ticket holder), the Citadel Bulldogs, Georgia Bulldogs and the Tampa Bay Bucs. He rarely missed a game and was a virtual encyclopedia of facts, stats and lineups of the teams he loved.

For the last years of his life he lived in Clermont Florida with his son and daughter in law, Nat and Jocklyn. Leland loved living on the lake, sitting on the back deck watching his favorite teams or just hanging out with family and friends. It is with confidence Nat and Jocklyn know they will be with him again in heaven.

Leland was predeceased by his bride of 60 years Joyce Ann. He is survived by his sons, Leland Nathan Mundy (Jocklyn), and Victor Pennington Mundy; grandsons, Leland Nathan, Calvin Hastings and Robert Christian Mundy, Leland Victor Mundy and Leland Romeyn; granddaughters, Madison and Megan Mundy and Carrie Romeyn; great granddaughter, Ava Weeks; brother, Gregg along with nieces and nephews. A private interment service will be held for both Joyce and Leland at the Summerall Chapel Columbarium at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Memorial contributions may be made to The Citadel Class of 1958 Scholarship Fund.
