Lawrence W. Beaty, Jr.Mr. Beaty, age 85 of 5844 Crossing King Drive, Charlotte, NC, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2004. Funeral Services will be held at Hickory Grove Baptist Church at 11 AM Saturday, June 12, 2004 with Reverend Dr. Joe Brown and the Reverend John Harrill officiating. Military Rites will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:45 until the time of service at the church.Mr. Beaty was educated in the Charlotte public school system and then attended The Citadel from which he graduated in 1940. Upon graduation he received a commission in the Regular Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in the Army for six years, attaining the rank of Major.Major Beaty had a distinguished combat record in World War II. He participated in the invasion of Omaha Beach, the capture of Cherbourg, the St. Lo breakout, the capture of Fort Driant at Metz France, the Rhine Crossing, and was with Gen. McAuliffe when surrounded by the Germans at Bastone, Belgium during the battle of the Bulge, where Mcaullife said ‘NUTS’ when asked by the Germans to surrender. Major Beaty received five Bronze Battle Stars for his service in the European Theatre. His last command was of a battalion in the 101st Airborne Division.After the war, Mr. Beaty was a traveling salesman for W. Koury Co. of Sanford, NC. He later became co-owner of Acme Carpet Mills, and then became Sales Manager for Exclusive Carpets of New York, and ended his business
