Lawrence A. Dodds ’50

DODDS, Lawrence Lawrence Aloysius Dodds, husband of Mildred White Dodds died peacefully at home on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008. Mr. Dodds was born September 12, 1923 in Charleston, the son of John J. Dodds and Loretta Hennessy Dodds. He attended Bishop England High School, Clemson University, and obtained a Bachelor of Science from the Citadel in 1950. A World War II veteral serving in the Fighting 36th Infantry Division, Mr. Dodds was wounded at Cassino, Anzio, and seriously wounded in southern France. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, one with V for Valor and Gallantry for action on the Rapido River, Cassino; one Silver Star, a Purple Heart, and an Oak Leaf Cluster. As an electrical/electronics engineer, he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as Project Manager of all surface vessels, retiring in 1978. He was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church, former President of the Christ Our King Men’s Organization, former President of the Charleston Chapter National Association of Naval Technical Supervisors, founding member, coach and former President of the East Cooper Youth Organization, original member of the Sullivan’s Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Scout Master of Troop 36, member of Snee Farm Country Club, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, #704, 3rd and 4th degree. Mr. Dodds is survived by his loving wife of 61 years; five daughters, Diane Dodds Levesque (Jim), Judith Marie Dodds, Virginia Dodds Forsbert (Joe), Suzanne Dodds Kuppens (Tommy), and Sally Dodds Collins (Nick); two sons, Lawrence A. Dodds, Jr., and Gerald J. Dodds (Donna); 13 grandchildren, Michael Justin Edwards, Kerri A. Forsberg, Joseph L. Forsberg, Courtney Collins Oberly (Ryan), Nicholas A. Collins, Emily A. Kuppens, Thomas N. Kuppens, Jessica Dodds Stone (Harris), Lawrence Logan Dodds, Marie H. McMahon, Courtney Frail Kinowski (ryan), Whitney M. Frail and Hollen E. Dodds; and one great grandchild, Harris Marion Stone. Mr. Dodds is also survied by two brothers, John J. Dodds, II (Florine), J. Bernard Dodds (Tessi); and two sisters, Mary Loretta Dodds Moore and Helen Dodds Sheppard. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Dodds Jacobs and Carolyn Dodds McDonald; and one brother, Hugh G. Dodds. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Mt. Pleasant Chapel of McAlister-Smith, 1520 Rifle Range Rd., from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with a Rosary at 5:30. The funeral Mass for Mr. Dodds will be Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1122 Russell Dr., Mt. Pleasant, followed by the Rite of Committal at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Respite Care Ministries, 405 King St., Charleston, SC 29403.
