Keating “Lewis” Smith, 62, of Gren Pond, died Saturday, August 14, 2021. The graveside service for Lewis will be held at 10 o’clock Friday, August 20th at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree Cemetery, 1151 Elm Savannah Road, Hopkins, South Carolina 29061. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. Born July 16, 1959, in Columbia, SC, he was a son of the late Charles Tucker Smith, III and Emily Heath Smith. Lewis was a graduate of Dreher High School, he attained his Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Citadel in Charleston, SC, and a Master’s in Business Management form Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He also held a certification in Ground Water Hydrology and Contamination from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. Lewis honorably served four years on active duty in the United States Air Force and retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. As a civilian, he worked as a project engineer, resident engineer in charge of construction and project manager for the Army Corps of Engineers and US Navy while living in Savannah, GA, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Keflavik, Iceland, and Green Pond, SC. Surviving are his brother, Charles Smith; sister, Mackie (Pat) O’Keefe; niece, Emily (Byron) Davison; nephew, Michael O’Keefe; as well as his great-nieces, Keating Davison, Rebecca Davison, and Allison O’Keefe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree, 1151 Elm Savannah Road, Hopkins, SC 29061 or the Citadel Development Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
