Joseph Whitney Cunningham, Jr., age 72, of Summerville, SC formerly of Sumter, SC died November 7, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon, November 10, 2008 at Bethany United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Summerville Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at Bethany United Methodist Church Monday afternoon from 12:30 – 2:30 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church Adornment Fund, 118 W. 3rd South Street, Summerville, SC 29483. Mr. Cunningham was born in Charleston, SC March 24, 1936 and lived in Sumter, SC until moving to Columbia, SC in 1959. He was the son of the late Joseph Whitney Cunningham Sr. and the late Elizabeth Stokes Cunningham Saunders. He was the step-son of the late Clarence E. Sport Saunders. Mr. Cunningham was a graduate of Carlisle Military Academy and attended THE CITADEL from 1955 1958. He received his Mortgage Banking Certificate from Northwestern University and served in the SC Air National Guard. He was a retired Magistrate of Dorchester County. He was a Honorary Commander of the Operations Group at CAFB and served on the Honorary Wing Commander Advisory Board. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and The Sam Wood Bible Class. He is survived by his wife, Norma Croswell Cunningham of Summerville, SC and three daughters, Elizabeth Cunningham King and Temple Cunningham Lafond, both of Summerville, SC and Whitney Ann Cunningham Lewis of Murrells Inlet, SC, two sons-in-law, Jonny Lafond and Hal Lewis, three brothers, Peter Stokes Cunningham of Houston, Texas, Calhoun Dove Cunningham of Myrtle Beach, SC and William Temple Cunningham of Columbus, GA, seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
