Joseph Shields Brinkley Jr., 95, of Briarcliffe Acres Community, died Saturday, June 9, 2007.He was predeceased by his wife, Essie, on November 8, 2006. Col. Brinkley is survived by his two sons, Robert C. Buffkin of San Antonio, Texas and William S. Brinkley (Anne) of Tucson, Arizona; as well as five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.He was a graduate of The Citadel.Col. Brinkley served in the regular U.S. Army for 22 years during which time he was involved in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Col. Brinkley was awarded a number of medals and campaign ribbons. He retired to Myrtle Beach in 1963. During his retirement, he was at various times, president of the Briarcliffe Acres Association, president of the Lions Club, Commander of the Long Bay Power Squadron, Commander of District 26 of the Power Squadron and a founding organizer of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. He has also served in many church positions, both at Lakeside Baptist Church and later Bible Fellowship Baptist Church, including trustee, finance committee member, adult teacher, study committee member, deacon and moderator of the Waccamaw Baptist Association. He also performed other volunteer duties. He was active until the end of his life and will be sorely missed by his family, friends, church and the community in general. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Lee Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2007, at Bible Fellowship Baptist Church.
