Joseph Michael McDermott, Jr., of Bluffton, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2019, following a courageous battle with ALS He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Ann Morrison McDermott, their children Joseph Michael McDermott, III, (Courtney) of Beaufort, SC, and Katherine Elizabeth McDermott Elkins (Ron) of Wise, VA, and four grandchildren, Morgan, Reece, Brennan and Ava. He is also survived by his brother Charles Brian McDermott, his sister Judith Teresa McDermott Bryla (Leon). He was predeceased by his mother and father, Joseph Michael McDermott, Sr., and Elizabeth McGovern McDermott, and sisters Carol Ann Cassidy (Paul), Betty Jane McDermott and numerous cousins, nieces and nephewsJoseph was born October 29, 1947, in Union, New Jersey. A graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC, he was a proud Bulldog for all his days since graduating with the class of 1969. He served in the United States Army reaching the rank of Captain, working with NATO in Germany. After leaving the Army he served in different executive and sales capacities until his retirement. A devout Catholic, his devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ was outstanding. He was a founding member of the parish council of Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood, TN, where he lived and served for more than 30 years before retiring and moving to Bluffton, SC. He was a lifetime student of history and loved taking walks with his grandchildren and teaching them about the world around them. He had just begun pursing his longtime interest in woodworking, completing a beautiful cutting board for his wife shortly before his diagnosisHis greatest love was his wife of 48 years, who was his rock and steadfast companion until he took his last breath. He was a proud father to his children and a loving “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren. For him, family was everything and his faith supported that loveHis funeral will be held Thursday, August 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton, SC. Father Charles McDermott, Joseph’s twin brother, will celebrate the mass. The family will receive friends and loved ones in the Parish Hall immediately following the service. The internment will take place at the Beaufort National Cemetery on Friday, August 30 at 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ALS Association-South Carolina ChapterA Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 Saint Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SCBurial will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 30, 2019 at Beaufort National Cemetery with Army Honors.
