The Reverend John William Brown went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 29, 2005. He was born in Charlotte, NC on September 5, 1932 to the late John Albert Brown and Harriet Ruth Collins Brown. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Karsten Brown daughters Elizabeth D’Herde and Katherine Sharpe brother George Brown grandson Joshua Bussey. Father Brown attended schools in Charlotte and was a 1954 graduate of the Citadel. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1954 to 1967. During that time, he was assigned to Marine Barracks in Washington, DC where he was a White House Aide and met his wife who was representing the State of Missouri during the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival. His wife, LaVerne is the daughter of the late Hon. and Mrs. Frank M. Karsten, formerly of St. Louis, Mo and San Antonio, TX. After tours of duty in North Carolina, Norfolk, Virginia and Camp Pendleton, Capt Brown went to Vietnam. Upon his return, he entered Virginia Theological Seminary and received his Master of Divinity in l974 and returned to North Carolina. Fr. Brown served churches in North Carolina and Texas and was also a Chaplain at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX during his is 31 years of ministry. Prior to his death, he was serving as Assisting Priest at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Universal City. Fr. Brown was a member of the Episcopal Religious Community of The Worker Sisters/Worker Brothers of the Holy Spirit since 1983. He was also a member of the Order of St. Luke. Fr. Brown will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Universal City, TX. The Reverend Timothy Vellom will be officiating. There will be a reception following the Service.
