John Wood Bateman, 66, died Monday, January 19, 2009, in Tidelands Community Hospice House. Mr. Bateman was born in Springhill, La., September 11, 1942, a son of the late James William Bateman, Jr. and Percy Suttle Bateman. He was a graduate of Louisiana Tech, The Citadel, and the University of South Carolina and earned master’s degrees in clinical psychology, school psychology, and school administration. Mr. Bateman served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a captain, earning two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Mr. Bateman was a research analyst for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C., for two years. From 1970 until 1992, he was employed by the Georgetown County School District as director of Guidance, Testing, and Psychological Services. He also was elected as a member of the Georgetown County School Board. In addition, he was owner and operator of The Osprey’s Nest gift shop for many years. Mr. Bateman was a member of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church. He was the widower of Rosann Gray Bateman and was also predeceased by his brother, James B. Bateman. Surviving are: his wife, Suzi Bateman of Georgetown; four daughters, Tiffany B. (Patrick) Osborne of Telluride, Colo., Tammy L. Bateman of Grand Junction, Colo., Anne R. (Alex) Salley and Jennifer G. Richie, both of Pawleys Island; two sons, Jeremy S. (Nat) Hansuvadha of Los Alamitos, Calif., and James Timothy Touzel of San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Charlie M. (Martha) Bateman of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren, John Patrick, Ava, Skyler, Dakota, Joshua, Trey, Justin, Gray and Misha. A celebration of the life of Mr. Bateman will be held at three o’clock Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy H. Tipton and the Rev. Alex Barron. A reception will be held following the service in the church sanctuary. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
