John Vafides, of Hull, MA, died on Friday, April 11, 2014 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth at the age of 92. Mr. Vafides was born in Hull and was a liflong resident of the town. He served with the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper in the 17th Airborne Division and was a prisoner of war. He was a graduate of Citadel College in South Carolina and for many years was a teacher for the Hanover Public School System. He was an active member of POW and VFW organizations. Mr. Vafides was an avid boxer and coach of the Golden Gloves. He especially enjoyed spending time with his friends at parties and Dunkin Donuts in Hull and sitting in his gazebo at home smoking cigars. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Jacobs) Vafides and father of Irene Vafides of Hull. Brother of Henry Vafides of Florida, Robert W. Vafides of Hingham and the late Dorothy Stetson, Alexander, Nicholas, Helen and Charles Vafides. He is also survived by his special adopted grandchildren, Katherine and Robert Spitz of Hull and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church, 43 Highland Ave., Cohasset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Tuesday from 4 – 8 p.m. Interment in Hull Village Cemetery In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory would be appreciated to the Paul and Diane Hickey Family Scholarship Fund, c/o Hingham Institute for Savings, 55 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043 to be given to Hingham High School students.
