John Thurman “Johnny” Herndon III, of Edisto Island, husband of Margaret “Meg” Godwin Herndon, went to early Sunday worship with his Savior on the morning of September 26, 2021. He was 71.
Johnny was born in Orangeburg, SC September 14, 1950, a son of the late John Thurman Herndon Jr. and Phoebe Jane George Herndon. He was a 1972 graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and dearly loved his alma mater, spending many Saturdays over the years tailgating at football games with family and friends. He was a member of The Citadel Alumni Association.
Johnny loved farming from an early age, raised livestock, and was a vital part of the Herndon Stockyards in Ehrhardt. He owned and operated Herndon Insurance Agency in Charleston, eventually retiring to Edisto Island, where he spent his days with family and friends golfing and fishing. He was a member of The Plantation Course at Edisto.
Johnny was the very definition of a true Christian man. He was an active member, and elder, of the Edisto Beach Baptist Church. He was involved with the men’s breakfast club, the supper club, and the Edisto Island Mission Team. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many, and he will truly will be missed.
In addition to his beloved wife of 47 years, Johnny is survived by his children Jay Herndon (Brook), Janelle Pusser (Thomas), and Erin Brock (Brandon). He leaves behind his sister Anne Oswald (Ned), his brother Larry Herndon (Karen), and his father-in-law Robert A. Godwin. There are nine grandchildren he dearly loved: Lance Turner, Maggie Pusser, Peyton Brock, Cayden Pusser, Finn Brock, Lucy Herndon, Lyla Pusser, Sidda Leigh Brock, and Luke Herndon.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, September 30, 2021 at 11:00 at the Edisto Beach Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall beginning at 9:00 that morning, and committal services will be held that afternoon at 3:00, at the Ehrhardt Cemetery on Mt. Pleasant Road in Ehrhardt. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made, to either the Edisto Beach Baptist Church, 414 Jungle Road, Edisto Island, SC 29438, or to the Edisto Island Mission Team, P.O.B. 193, Edisto Island, SC 29438.
