John Patrick Hughes, Sr., 87, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at his home. Born March 26, 1921, in Greenville, SC, and raised in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Maynard Bryant and Teresa Scruggs Hughes. A 1938 graduate of Spartanburg High School, he was a 1942 graduate of the Citadel where he was a member of the Summerall Guard. Mr. Hughes was the owner of City News Agency for 60 years and Pic-A-Book, Inc., a bookstore at Hillcrest, for 35 years. He was a very active member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church his entire life where he led the Fund Raising Committee to build St. Paul’s Catholic School. He was a Life member of the Father Maurice R. Daily Council 6076. He was also a Life member of the Father Maurice R. Daily Assembly 1655 of the 4th Degree and a past Faithful navigator of Assembly 1655. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served in Africa, Germany, and Italy, he graduated from the Command General Staff School in Fort Leavenworth, KS, as a Colonel, and taught there for a number of years before retiring from the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Retired Officers Club in Spartanburg, past President of the Association of Citadel Men and the Spartanburg Citadel Club, past President of the Rotary Club of Spartanburg and a member since 1947, District Governor of the SC District of Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow, President of the Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts in 1991, 1992, and 1993, recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and a James West Fellow, President of the Housing Authority, President of the United Way campaign and United Way Chairman, President of the Atlantic Coast Independent Distributors Association for magazine and newspaper distributors, a member of the Senior Golfers Association, and an avid golfer for many years. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jane Klim Hughes; a daughter, Jane Hughes Warner of Spartanburg; three sons, John Patrick Hughes, Jr. and his wife Donna Jean Hughes of Spartanburg, Mark Bryant Hughes and his wife Tina Puckett Hughes of Landrum, and Phillip Luke Hughes and his wife Kay Sides Hughes of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, Angel Greer Hjarding, Joshua Patrick Hughes, Mark Bryant Hughes, Jr., Kirby Michelle Hughes, and Carson Hughes; two great-grandchildren, Patrick Hjarding and Pearl Hughes; and three sisters, Margie Hughes Gaffney, Barbara Hughes Bennett and her husband David, and Teresa Hughes Klim and her husband Joseph Klim. A rosary prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2008, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 27, 2008, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church conducted by the Rev. James M. Crowley. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary Escort will be members of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus and the Rotary Club of Spartanburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, 161 North Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. The family is at the home.
