Dr. John Murr Rhame, 92, loving husband of Betty Tyson Rhame, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at his home. Born Dec. 16, 1919, in Camden, he was a son of the late George Ashby and Zoe Hall Rhame. Dr. Rhame graduated from The Citadel and the Medical University of South Carolina. Upon completion of medical school he served in the Army of Occupation in Germany. During his 35 years of practice in Sumter, he served a term as chief of staff of Tuomey Hospital and was a past president of the Sumter-Clarendon Medical Society, the Sumter County Medical Association, and the Sumter Tuberculosis Society. He was a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Rhame was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 60 years. He was an avid golfer and sailor through the age of 85. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Marian Rhame, Zoe Rhame (Frank) Warmoth, Beth (Christopher) Nettles and Jan Martin; a son, John Murr Rhame Jr.; and six grandchildren, James Warmoth, Anna Warmoth, Tyson Nettles, Hampton Nettles, Beth Martin and Maria Martin; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, George Ashby Rhame, William Hall Rhame and Joseph Burns Rhame; and one sister, Betty Zoe Leggett. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Gorry officiating.
