John Martin Moseley, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 24, 2012, John Martin Moseley, husband of Phyllis Dawson Moseley, of Charleston, SC. Marty was born on January 18, 1932, a son of Ethel Napier and James Roland Moseley, Jr., in Charleston, SC. He graduated from Bishop England High School, The Citadel and attended USC for graduate studies. Marty taught at Macedonia High School and Beaufort High School. He was the Dean of Continuing Education at Trident Technical College and was the first Director of The Palmer Campus in downtown Charleston. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska, “where he could see Russia from his front tent”. He always liked a good joke. Marty was involved with many organizations both during his working years and after retirement. He was on the Board of the Salvation Army, The Shepherd Center, where he served as director; and, The Elderlink Board where he was instrumental in having access to “bingo” money to be used toward a senior center for the Tri-County area. He went to Mayor Joe Riley and together they went forward with what became the LowCountry Senior Coalition where he was President and then served on the Board of Directors. This eventually became The LowCountry Senior Center where he continued on the Board of Directors. He was awarded The Charleston County Private Industry Council’s Lifetime Service Award for 30 years of distinguished performance. He served as President of the Council on Military Education in South Carolina. He also served on The Mayor’s Commission on Aging. In 2005, the LowCountry Senior Network presented him with Super Senior of the Year award. In his last years, he became involved with the College of Charleston’s Center for Creative Retirement. He served on the Program Committee where he again called upon his friends and acquaintances to speak. As a friend wrote to him recently, “yesterday’s speaker was a good one and reminded us of the breath and depth of knowledge of our area that you bring”. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his children. They are Bernadette M. Gernand and her husband Jeff, Elizabeth M. Reagan and her husband, Dan Kim and Roland Moseley and his wife, Angela. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Daniel Reagan, Katie Reagan, Anna Moseley, Abigail Moseley, Anna Gernand and George Gernand, his beautiful great-grandson, Liam Reagan and his step-grandchildren Amy Lord and Dan Kim, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Roland Moseley, III and his sister in law, Colleen Godley Moseley. Marty is also survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Dawson Moseley; also known as “Marty’s Wife”, without whom none of the above could have been accomplished. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. John Martin Moseley are invited to attend his Mass of Christian at 1:00 PM, Monday, February 27, 2012, at Nativity Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family will receive friends this Sunday afternoon between 4:00 and 6:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. A Vigil Service will begin at 5:00 PM. Memorials may be made to The LowCountry Senior Center, 865 Riverland Dr., Charleston, SC 29412 or Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Arrangements by JAMES A. MCALISTER Funerals & Cremation. 766-1365 Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/deaths. Tags: 1957
