John M. Dwelle, ’37

John Myers Dwelle, of North Myrtle Beach, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2017. Born on June 5, 1914 in Lexington, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Harold Cothran Dwelle and Mary Myers Dwelle and the grandson of John Springs Myers. At age 13, he and his family relocated from Kings Mountain to the Myers homestead on E. Trade Street in Charlotte. He attended Charlotte City Schools and Porter Military Academy (now Porter-Gaud) in Charleston, SC, class of 1933. Upon graduation he enrolled at The Citadel and continued his education at the Poughkeepsie Business School in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1937, he married his first wife, Harriette Culp Dwelle, the mother of his five children. After her death, he married Virginia Farmer Dwelle and following her passing in 2001, he wed Sue McEntire Dwelle. In the late 30’s, he opened the John M. Dwelle Real Estate Company with offices in the Latta Arcade and became very active in the Charlotte Realtors Association serving as its President in 1950 and still holds an active NC Realtor’s license, number eleven. Mr. Dwelle was an avid outdoor sportsman and loved big game hunting. Acquiring his pilot’s license in the late 1950’s, he flew all over the U.S., Canada, Alaska, and the Caribbean. Instrument rated, he flew rescue missions searching for downed planes in the NC mountains and transporting burned children for the Shriners to various hospitals in the Northeast. He was a founding member of the Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club, a life member of the NRA, and at one time was the NC Small Bore Pistol Champion. He was also a member of the Oasis Shriners, member of Phalanx Lodge #31, Charlotte Country Club, Charlotte City Club, the Goodfellows Club, the Sons of the Confederacy, the Catawba Yacht Club, the Charlotte Civitan Club, charter member of Christ Episcopal Church, and now a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church. However, he considered the most important thing he did in his life was accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior and being baptized in the river Jordan. Besides his parents and wives, he was predeceased by his sister, Elephare Dwelle Zimmerman. He is survived by his wife, and daughters, Harriette Dwelle Powell (Larry) of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Sara Dwelle Klatt of Charlotte, Mary Morgan Dwelle of Charlotte, Joy Dwelle Wyatt of Charlotte, and his son, John Myers Dwelle, Jr. (Carol) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and step-son, Tom Reese of Charlotte.
