John Lawrence (Larry) Sartory, of West Palm Beach and Lake Placid, FL passed away on October 17 after a 20 month battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Candace Rae; daughter, Wendy Sartory Link (Scott) of Palm Beach Gardens and Lake Placid, FL; sons, Richard Lawrence Sartory (Pamela) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Mark Alan Sartory (Connie) of Jupiter, FL, Dennis Bedenbender (Shannon) of Denver, CO, Mark Bedenbender (Roslyn) of Whistler, Canada and Minneapolis, MN; brother, Tom Sartory of Boston, MA;12 grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Virginia Sartory of West Palm Beach, FL. Larry was born in Pittsburgh, PA. His family moved to Ft. Lauderdale during his early formative years. After attending the Citadel, he began his newspaper career with Perry Publications as Advertising Manager of the Delray Beach News Journal. He was promoted to National Advertising Manager of The Palm Beach Post and Evening Times, then Publisher of the Jackson County Floridian. When Cox Newspapers purchased The Palm Beach Post, he returned to West Palm Beach as National Advertising Manager, was promoted to Advertising Director, Director of Sales and Marketing for Palm Beach Newspapers and then President of Palm Beach Newspapers. He retired from the newspaper business in 1987 to serve as marketing chairman of the 1987 PGA Championship. In 1987 he purchased Colee and Company, then the biggest ad agency in Palm Beach County and sold it in 1997, retiring to a golf course life style at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, FL. Larry was a strong believer in the premise that if you benefit from a community you should give back to the community. He was most proud of helping to create the Pathfinders Scholarship Fund of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, now the largest such foundation in the market. He was also an impetus for the Palm Beach Convention Center, a ten year project which opened in 2004. Larry was the Founder and organizer of the Palm Beach County chapter of Junior Achievement, served as Chairman of the Better Business Bureau of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, President of the West Palm Beach Rotary Club, one of the Founders of the Palm Beach County Business Development Board, President of Discover Palm Beach County, Chairman of the Economic Council of Palm Beach County, Founder of the Forest Hill Jaycees, Chairman of United Way of Palm Beach County, President of the Meadowlake HOA in Lake Placid, Board member of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce and Board member of the Hanley Hazelton Institute. He also served on Florida Tax Watch, the Palm Beach County Bar Grievance Committee and the Florida State Bar Advertising Violations Committee. He was a proud recipient of the Free Enterprise Award from Palm Beach Atlantic University. Professionally he served as President of the Florida Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives and State Vice President of the International Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives. After retirement, he served Citrus and Highlands Counties as a Certified Court Mediator. A family gathering will celebrate his life at a private memorial service in Lake Placid, FL.
