John Leiston Cobb, Sr., 77, of 191 Longleaf Drive, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009. Born in Spartanburg, he was a son of the late James Wiley and Ethel Greenewald Cobb. Mr. Cobb was a graduate of The Citadel, class of 1952 where he played varsity golf and basketball. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps where he served as a fighter pilot. Mr. Cobb was a Southern Conference Football Official and enjoyed coaching little league football and baseball. He served on the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education from 1967-1991 and was also a member of the Civitan Club of Spartanburg and the Spartanburg Jaycees. Mr. Cobb enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a past president of the Country Club of Spartanburg and was co-owner of Greenewald’s Men’s Clothing Store. Mr. Cobb is survived by his companion of fifteen years, Mary Lib Hamilton; two daughters, Nancy and her husband, David Briggs and their children, Karen, Cam, Abbie, and Ryan of Spartanburg, Ethel and her husband, McKiever Hunter and their children, Maggie and Kiever of Boone, NC; two sons, Jack and his wife, Libby Cobb, Jr., and their children, Dylan, Max, and Savannah of Spartanburg, Ned Cobb and his son, Zach of Cookeville, TN; and a brother, James D. Cobb of Lake Bowen. A graveside service will be held Friday, January 16, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Pastor T. Lee Bryant. Memorials may be given in remembrance of Mr. Cobb to Spartanburg Day School, 1701 Skylyn Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307 or Converse College, Office of Development, 580 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
