John H. Peck, 85, of Elkton, MD, formerly of Chesapeake City, MD, passed away peacefully October 20, 2011 at Singerly Manor Assisted Living surrounded by his loving family. Born in New York, NY on October 5, 1926, John was the son of the late Joseph and Nellie Place Durgin. A 1943 graduate of St. Ann’s Academy in New York, John also completed a Civil Engineering degree from the Citadel College. In 1944, he enlisted in the Navy and following basic training, he was transferred to Treasure Island, San Francisco Bay and assigned to the USS Noble, delivering supplies and troops to many of the South Pacific Islands as part of the first wave of ships in the invasion of Okinawa. At the end of the war, he went to North Korea to repatriate American, Australia and British prisoners of war. John’s working career was as a Civil Engineer with DuPont for 29 years, which included travel to many DuPont plants in the U.S., as well as, in Europe and 2-1/2 years in the Middle East. John enjoyed boating, fishing and gardening. Family vacations included camping and water activities from New Hampshire to the Florida Keys and upstate New York to California. John’s vacations included travel in Europe and to Africa. After retiring, he lived in Marco Island, FL, Smith Mountain Lake, VA and most recently Chesapeake City, MD and Singerly Manor. John’s family is appreciative of the care and compassion John received from the staff of Singerly Manor and Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care of Elkton, MD. He is survived by four daughters, Maura Perkins (Eric) of Elkton, MD, Susan P. Shaffer (Bud) of Newark, DE, Aileen Whitaker (Mark) of Fairfax Station, VA and Elizabeth Lewis (Gilbert) of Delaware City, DE; 7 grandchildren, Kelly, Erica and Lisa Perkins, Angie Lewis, Jeffrey Shaffer and Sandra and Mark Whitaker; as well as a special cousin, Judy Meyer of Greenwich, CT. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Peck who died in 2009. A memorial service will be held at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 on Friday October 28, 2011 at 12 noon with a visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
