Col. John Homer Cawley, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 90, of North Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Brenda Sexton Cawley, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 26, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Sunday, June 30, 2024 in Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 4990 Dorchester Road, at 2:00 pm. Interment, Live Oak Cemetery, Walterboro, SC. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 pm until time of service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel. John was born August 22, 1933 in Waynesboro, GA, son of the late John and Willie Mae Cawley. He graduated from Walterboro High School and The Citadel in 1955 with Department Honors, where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. John served his country for 23 years and retired from active duty in 1979 with the rank of Colonel. He was stationed in Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, and many other areas of the world. John’s decorations include the Army Commendations Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four battle stars, Vietnam Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster and the Legion of Merit. After retiring from the Army, John went to work for the City of North Charleston. He served in many capacities to include Community Development Manager, Planning Director, and Economic Development Coordinator in the Mayor’s Office. John was involved in the recruiting of companies such as Boeing, Diamler and Verizon. He was a member of Solomon’s Lodge No. 1, a Scottish Rite Mason, a 32nd degree Shriner and President of the National Sojourners Chapter. John was a member of the North Charleston Rotary Breakfast Club and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Crime Stoppers, a board member of the World Trade Center, a member of the SC Economic Development Association, a lifetime member of the Association of The Citadel Men, Regional Development Corporation member, the Charleston Metro Chamber Military Relations Policy Council member, Lifetime member of the retired Officer’s Association; a member of the Washington Light Infantry and a board member of the Charleston Animal Society. He was an avid golfer and a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. John is survived by his three sons: Dr. John Cawley (Gina), Michael Cawley, and Hugh Cawley all of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Julie Johnson of Charleston, SC; stepson, Matthew Washburn (Elizabeth) of Atlanta, GA; brother, Richard Cawley (Sherry) of Walterboro, SC; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his brother, George Cawley and sister, Mary Dell VanLandingham. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 4990 Dorchester Road, N.
