John Douglass Harrison, M.D., 90, resident of 1110 Marshall Road, widower of Dolores “Dolly” Riblet Harrison, died March 20, 2009, in Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Winnsboro, SC, he was a son of the late Dr. John Douglass Harrison and Elizabeth McMaster Harrison. Dr. Harrison attended the Greenwood County Schools and was a graduate of The Citadel and Johns Hopkins University Medical School. He worked in pathology at Philadelphia General Hospital and had his surgical residency training at Vanderbilt University interrupted by World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for over 2 years, part of which was in the South Pacific where he served as a battlefield surgeon. After his retirement from the Army, Dr. Harrison joined his father’s medical practice in Greenwood. In the early 1950s he and Dr. W.P. Turner formed a partnership which continued until his retirement in July of 1985. After his retirement, he operated the Promised Land Tree Farm, home of “Dr. John’s Christmas Trees.” Dr. Harrison was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a past deacon and a member of the Henry Reynolds Sunday School Class. He was a member of the original staff of Self Memorial Hospital and a past Chief of Staff. He was also a member of numerous professional organizations and social clubs including the Southeastern Surgical Congress, American Academy of Family Physicians, Kiwanis Club, Duncannon Hunt Club, Greenwood Country Club and the Greenwood County Forestry Association. Surviving are his four children, Lynn and husband, Sid Johnston, of Greenwood, Beth and husband, Robin Todd, of Laurens, John and wife, Jeanne Harrison, of Greenwood and Guy and wife, Donna Harrison, of Greenwood; eight grandchildren, Harrison and wife, Hollie Ellinwood, of Raleigh, NC, Gordon Johnston of Columbia; Robert Todd of Charleston, Elizabeth Todd of Charleston, Elizabeth and husband, Bo Ferguson, Ashley and husband, Joe Sitton, and John and wife, Megan Harrison, all of Columbia, and Lauren Harrison of Charleston; three great-grandchildren, Blakeley Ferguson, Coleman Ferguson and Emily Sitton, all of Columbia. Dr. Harrison was predeceased by a brother, Donald McMaster Harrison. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p..m. Sunday in Oakbrook Memorial Park with Rev. David Mayo officiating.
