John Carson Hay Steele, Sr., of Summerville, entered into eternal rest February 23, 2009. He was born in faculty quarters on the campus of Porter Military Academy in Charleston June 30, 1920, to Carson and Lena St. Clair Steele. He attended Porter and graduated from the Citadel in 1941. He served in the Army in World War II in Panama and later in Europe, reaching the rank of Captain. While in the Panama Canal Zone, he met his beloved wife Jane Stevens and they were married at Saint Philips Church in Charleston in 1943. After the war he moved to North Augusta, where he had a long career as a mechanical engineer at the Savannah River Plant and where he was an active member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. After retirement he returned to his beloved Charleston, where he was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church, the Carolina Yacht Club, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Society of First Families of South Carolina. He was proud of his Scottish heritage and served actively in the Clan Hay Society. Besides family, his loves were genealogy and Charleston. He updated and republished The Family of Hay, Book II, in 1986, and with James Rhett II and later Robert Pinckney Rhett published Charleston Then and Now in 1974 and a second edition in 1996. Jack was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Charles and his daughter Erroll. He is survived by his wife Jane, his sons John and Peter, and grandchildren Katie, Sarah and Ben. A memorial service will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC on Saturday Feb 28 at 11:00 AM, with private interment to follow at St. Pauls in Summerville.
