Jerry Wayne Blackwell, 67, of Greer, died November 4, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. He was born on November 10, 1945 to the late Roy Lee Olin and Earline Littlefield Blackwell. After growing up in Apalache and finishing Greer High School, he graduated from The Citadel, class of 1968, where he was the captain of the baseball team, received the Most Valuable Player award his senior year and was also selected as first team All Southern Conference. He played professional baseball with the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburg Pirates. Mr. Blackwell was the owner and operator of JB Construction Company building houses in California and South Carolina, a member of the Woodworkers Guild. Mr. Blackwell was a member of Washington Baptist Church. He is survived by his brother, Michael Duane Blackwell and his wife Delaine of Irmo; two nephews, Christopher Michael Blackwell and his wife Jessica and Jason Clinton Blackwell and his wife Crystal; four great-nephews, Ezra, Reese, Eli and Ezekiel Blackwell and four great nieces, Ellie, Eliza, Sadie and Evangeline Blackwell. The family will have a graveside service 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Memorial park conducted by Rev. Joe Price, Rev. Jason Blackwell and Mr. Chris Blackwell. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Young Life of Columbia, P.O. Box 5772, Columbia, S.C. 29250.
