Jerry Ray Powell, M.D., age 77, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2016, at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born in Dillon County, SC, on November 12, 1938, he was the son of the late Stacey William Powell and the late Mary Lester Powell. He received his education at Kingstree, SC public schools, graduating from the Citadel in 1961 and from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1965. He served his internship at Cincinnati General Hospital, and his surgical residency at Wilford Hall United States Air Force Hospital. Dr. Powell served as flight surgeon, and was a member of the medical staff of the United States Air Force Academy.
He moved to Anderson, SC in 1975 to join Drs. Wilson Orr and Don Roberts in practice of General and Vascular surgery. He was a founding partner of the Surgical Clinic of Anderson and was a member of that group for 30 years. During his years of practice, Dr. Powell served in many leadership positions including Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Board of AnMed, and was one of only three Anderson area doctors to serve as President of the state Medical Association. Dr. Powell served as a delegate to AMA for a number of years, and served several terms on the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church including two years as Senior Warden. In his free time, he was an avid golfer and was a long-time member of Cobb’s Glen.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Irene “Gill” Holcome Powell; sons, Robert Goodwyn (Betsy King), of Greenville, SC, and William Marshall “Bee” (Andraya Hoffman), of Roswell, GA; grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth, Robert Edward, Marshall Ray, and Daniel Edward; a brother, Charles Powell and his family, of Florence, SC; sisters, Joann P. Suber and her family, of Simpsonville, SC and Jean P. Bennett and her family of Lake City, SC.
Dr. Powell was preceded in death by a son, Edwards Rogers “Ned”; and a brother, Stacey Bryan Powell.
The Funeral Service to honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Powell will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Jack D. Hardaway, IV officiating.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday. May 4, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home.
