Jerome E. Fewox, ’59

Jerome Ellis Fewox, 89, of Hanahan, went to his heavenly home peacefully, surrounded by loving family members, on May 28, 2026. His family held a private funeral service and interment at Limestone Baptist Church in Dorchester, SC, on June 2.

Jerry was born on July 27, 1936, in the old downtown Roper Hospital. His mother, Harriet Goldman Fewox, and his father, Bud George Fewox, were living on Coming Street at the time. The family moved to West Ashley, and he played football at St. Andrews High School, graduating in 1955. He graduated from The Citadel in 1959 with a B.S. in Business Administration, earning his pilot’s license while he was there. Jerry trained at Ft. Benning, GA, and then at Ft. Rucker, AL, the home of Army Aviation training. He became very proficient flying fixed wing aircraft (Mohawks) and rotary aircraft (Hueys) and flew Mohawks during a tour in South Korea in 1964. In 1965-1966 he was stationed at Fort Jackson, SC, and from there he left to do a tour in Vietnam in 1967. A member of the 114th Aviation Co., he was the maintenance officer of his unit and flew Hueys, both troop ships and gunships.

He left the Army in 1968, and civilian life took him to work in textile companies, starting with Dan River Mills in Scottsville, VA., from 1968 – 1970. He returned to South Carolina to live in Summerville and worked for William Heller Co. in Moncks Corner. He returned to The Citadel to go to night school and earned his Master in Business Administration degree in 1975. A career in college teaching beckoned, and he taught part-time at The Citadel and the shipyard at night, after which he began to teach on a permanent basis at Trident Technical College. He retired from Trident and the State in 1999.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Cecelia (Ceil) Marie Fewox and her daughter Elizabeth Welch (Greg); his three daughters Kelly Fewox Henthorne (Paul), Audrey Fewox Osteen (Michael), and Nicole Fewox Knope (John), and his son, Eric Julius Fewox; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his brother Hiram Fewox and his sister Elvenia Fewox Myers.

Jerry loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his church, his family, and his life. He loved the music at both the church’s contemporary service and traditional service and loved it when the handbell choir played in the service. Contributions may be made in his memory to his church (North Charleston United Methodist Church,1125 East Montague Ave., North Charleston, SC 29405) to either the Handbell Chimes Fund or to the general budget.

The family is planning to hold at the church a Celebration of Life filled with the music that he loved at a time still to be determined, with a reception to follow. A notice will be posted in the newspaper and online when the date has been chosen.
