James Thomas Sloan VI (Jim AKA “Jimbo”) of Highland Village passed away at home on May 31, 2018 at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed for his humor, wit and loyalty to friends and family, but he was ready and eager to meet his Lord. Jim was born December 3, 1948 in Vicksburg, MS to James Thomas Sloan V and Nell Roberts Sloan. He grew up in Miami, FL and graduated from North Miami High School in 1966. He received a degree in structural engineering from the University of South Florida in 1970 and then was soon an Aircraft Commander in the USAF where he was stationed in Charleston, SC (76th MAS). While in Charleston he attained his MBA from The Citadel. After the Air Force he worked briefly as a structural engineer in Daytona Beach, FL, but soon returned to his true love of flying and started a 34 year career at American Airlines in 1978. He flew the Boeing 727, Super 80, and both the Boeing 737 and 777 where he served as captain on all aircrafts. He was also an AA Check Airman on the 727 and 737 (his favorite plane). He retired from flying in 2012. Jim was active in his community of Highland Village where he served as a City Councilman, treasurer of the McAuliffe Elementary PTA and was a founding board member of the Highland Village Baseball/Softball Association. He attended The Village Church in Flower Mound Texas where he came to truly know and love The Lord. Jim is survived by his wife of 31 years, Robyn and their 3 sons; son James Thomas Sloan VII (JT), wife Malinda and beloved granddaughter Sally (2 years old) of Round Rock, TX; son Conner of Denver, CO; son William and wife Lauren of Addison, TX. Jim is also survived by his brother William (Bill) and wife Lynn of Orlando, FL; mother-in-law June Ross of Canton, PA; sister-in-law Sharon Spencer and husband Marvin of Canton, PA; brother-in-law Harry Ross and wife Jude of Meshoppen, PA plus nieces and nephews in FL and PA. He was preceded in death by both parents, but is survived by step-mom, Phyliss Hunsinger Sloan of Daytona Beach, FL. A celebration of Jimbo’s life will be at 3 pm on Friday, June 15 at the Highland Village campus of The Village Church, 1700 Highland Village Road in Highland Village, TX. The celebration will continue at the family home following the services. A private internment for the family will be at the DFW National Veteran’s Cemetery Friday morning. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to PCF/Prostate Cancer Foundation due to Jim’s passion of curing prostate cancer or to The Village Church because of his love for The Lord.
