James S. Porter, 83, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Beacon Place Hospice in Greensboro. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 31, 2009, at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church with Dr. Ted Troutman and Greg Light officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. James was born May 12, 1926, in Greenville, SC to the late Robert Duncan and Helen Porter. During World War II he served aboard the USS Cassin Young D792. He graduated from the Citadel College, Charleston, SC in 1950. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church and teacher for the Laws Parks Sunday School Class. James was a registered professional civil engineer in NC, SC, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. He and retired from Burlington Industries in 1987 and was a life member of ASCE. He was Past Master of P.P. Tuner Lodge #746, member of the Oasis Temple, Charlotte, NC, Greensboro Shriners Club, Greensboro, NC, endowed member of Scottish Rite KCCH, York Rite, York Rite College, Allied Masonic Degree, Triad Council #286, Past Grand Patron of Grand Court of North Carolina, Order of the Amaranth, Past Royal Patron of Triad Court #13, Greensboro, NC, Order of the Amaranth, Past Patron of Greensboro Chapter #14, OES and High Point Chapter #106, OES, Past District Deputy Grand Patron of the 14th District Grand Court of NC, OES, Past Watchman of Shepherds of Gate City Shrine #2, Order of the White of Jerusalem, member of Buena Vista Lodge #21, International Order of Odd Fellows, and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Masonic District AF&AM #36. Mr. Porter is survived by his wife Doris M. Porter of the home; sons, John A. Porter of Greensboro, Kevin Porter of Japan; sisters, Helen P. Stanfield of Greensboro, and Emily Wood of Asheboro. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel.
