MELVIN, James James Stephen Melvin, Jr., 61, of North Charleston, died February 4, 2008. Born July 22, 1946 in Charleston, he was the son of Mr. James W. Melvin, Sr. and the late Mrs. Viola Lambright Melvin. James was a 1964 graduate of Bonds-Wilson High School. He attended Claflin College, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Biology in 1969. He obtained a Master of Science Degree in 1977 from The Military College of South Carolina and served as an Adult Education instructor at The Citadel for several years. He retired as a chemist in September 2007 from Mead-Westvaco Corporation’s Specialty Chemicals Division after 35 years. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church.James is survived by his father, James Sr. of North Charleston; sisters: Vivian M. Knight, Marilyn M. Goodson (Walter), Jannifer M. Dancy (Marvin), Jeraldine M. Heyward (Melvin), and Winifred M. Cooper; children: Azieal Shalem of Greensboro, NC, Juanita White of Charlotte, NC, and Todd Melvin of Summerville, SC; a long-time friend, Ms. Linda L. Gilliard; eleven grandchildren, aunts, uncles, many cousins, and innumerable friends. A private burial was held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service in Mr. Melvin’s honor will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008, 4:00 P.M. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 7396 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston.
