HAMPTON – Mr. James R. Calfee, P.E., passed away on Aug. 23, 2004, while at home and in the arms of his family. Jim was born on Nov. 5, 1940, in Princeton, W.Va., to Kelly and Helen Calfee and grew up in Hampton, Va. He lived in Destin, Fla., since 1996 with his beloved wife of 37 years, Mary League Calfee. Jim retired from Titan Corporation of Niceville in May of this year, from the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a Colonel in 2000, and from the U.S. Air Force as the civilian Director of Engineering for the Air Combat Command in 1996. Jim graduated from The Citadel in 1964 as a Civil Engineer and served on active duty in the Air Force as an RF-4 pilot during the Vietnam War. He earned a Master’s Degree from Golden Gate University in 1979 and was a Professional Engineer registered in the State of Vermont. He and Mary attended the First Presbyterian Church in Niceville. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Mary; son, J. Robert Calfee Jr. and his wife, Amy, and granddaughter, Anne Masters Calfee; and by his daughter, Mrs. Molly C. Callaghan and husband, LT Joseph G. Callaghan, USCG. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Helen H. Calfee, brother, Richard W. Calfee, and sister, Mrs. Teri Dawson, all of Newport News, Va., and several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. His wit and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him, and his charitable works will live on. Contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. A memorial celebration of Jim’s life was conducted for friends and family at the First Presbyterian Church of Niceville, Fla., on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The funeral will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Hampton, at one o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, Aug. 28, with Pastor George Oehler officiating. A reception at the Hampton Yacht Club will follow. R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home of Hampton, Va., has been entrusted with arrangements.
