Lt. Col. James M. Hagan, Sr., U.S. Army (Ret.), age 73, of Murrells Inlet, SC, died Tuesday September 30, 2008, at his home. Mr. Hagan was born in Due West, SC, March 18, 1935. He was raised in Greenwood, SC, graduated from Greenwood High School in 1953 and from The Citadel in 1957. He joined the U.S. Army that same year, served two years in Vietnam, from 1967-68 and 1969-70 and retired from the military in 1977. After retirement, he worked for the U.S. government in civil service, working a total of 35 years in federal service. Mr. Hagan was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church in Surfside, SC. He was also a member of Moose Lodge #2351 in Murrells Inlet, SC, Elks Lodge #1771 in Myrtle Beach, SC, as well as American Legion #0178 in Murrells Inlet. He loved to golf and bowl. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ruth and Lawrence D. Hagan Sr. of Greenwood, SC, sister, Marion Nichols of West Columbia and his first wife, Mary Weldon Hagan of Columbia, SC. Survived by wife, Marie Epps Hagan of Murrells Inlet, SC; brother, Lawrence D. Hagan, Jr. of Bennettsville, SC, and children, James Martin Hagan, Jr. of Seymour, IN, Mary Elizabeth Griffin of West Columbia, SC, Patricia Ann Kneece of Lexington, SC, Ruth Ellen Hampton of Augusta, GA, Rhonda Marie Smith of Columbia, SC, Christopher Cornell Counts of Liberty, SC, Barry Dean counts of Columbia, SC, and thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Surfside United Methodist Church. Burial will be 4:00 p.m. Thursday in Bush River Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Columbia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.
