James Martin Gordon, of Hoover, Ala., fell asleep in the Lord on July 31, 2022 at the age of 74. Born on April 20, 1948 in Cheverly, Maryland as the oldest of three children of Emanuel and Yvette Gordon, he grew up in the Washington, DC area. Following his 1969 graduation from The Citadel in Charleston, SC, he served as an Infantry Officer in the US Army before beginning a career as a Human Resources-Labor Relations executive. He was certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and during his working career was active in industry and professional organizations including the (Alabama) State Health Coordinating council, and the Human Resources Committees of the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association, the American Foundry Society, and the Business Council of Alabama. He also was active in community organizations, having served on the Board of Directors of Birmingham AIDS Outreach, St. Martin in the Pines Retirement Community, and Fellowship House, Inc. where he served as Board President. Mr. Gordon held a Master€™s Degree from Birmingham-Southern College and served as an Adjunct Faculty member in their Business Administration Department for over ten years. Following his retirement in 2011, Mr. Gordon served as an Alternate Associate Member of the Board of Appeals of the Alabama Department of Labor. He was a friend of Bill W. since September 25, 1989. A tonsured Reader in the Orthodox Church, James was a member of St. Symeon the New Theologian Orthodox Church, where he was also a Choir Member and a member of the Parish Council and the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of the South. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marguerite (Betsy) Gordon, daughters Marie (Francis Damiani) and Sarah (Joshua) Baker, three grandchildren €” Vivienne Louise Baker, Miles Aron Baker, and Charlotte Elizabeth Baker, a brother Gerald L. (Barbara) Gordon of Charleston, SC, and a sister Susan C. Shuping (David) of Southport, NC. Visitation will be on Friday, August 5, 2022 from 4:00 pm €” 6:00 pm at St. Symeon Orthodox Church (3101 Clairmont Avenue South, Birmingham, AL), followed by Great Vespers for the Feast of Transfiguration at 6:30 pm. The Funeral will be at St. Symeon on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 12:00 pm, followed by internment at Forest Crest Cemetery (5730 Highway 78E, Birmingham, AL). A meal of mercy in his memory will be served at 2:00 pm in the St. Symeon Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in his memory to St. Symeon the New Theologian Orthodox Church, The Citadel Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund, or to a charity of your choice.
