A memorial service for James Leroy (Jim) Burgess, Jr., of Camden, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Reverend Dr. William F. (Chip) Summers will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in John Knox Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020. Mr. Burgess, 86, died Sunday, June 28, 2009. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late James Leroy, Sr., and Sadie Ruth Clarke Burgess. A U.S. Navy World War II veteran, Mr. Burgess was a retired Kershaw County Administrator. He served as a board member of the Santee-Wateree RTA for 29 years and was a longtime member of the Wateree Wanderers Camping Club. He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty Beamguard Burgess; daughters, Susan Burgess Brewer of Camden, Glynn Burgess Waller and her husband, Denny, of Chehalis, WA; grandchildren, Rachel Anne Brewer, Hannah Martha Brewer, Michael Patrick Bannan, John Robert Mosier, Jr. and Charles Jackson Mosier; daughter-in-law, Deborah Caskey Burgess. He was predeceased by his son, Alan Leroy Burgess, grandson, Nicholas James Bannan and brother, William Clarke Burgess. Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
