James Johnson Cardo, Sr. Mr. Cardo, age 87, of Charlotte, passed away at his home on Monday, April 2, 2007, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. Born in New York City in 1919 to Rosa Dilworth Johnson and Sebastian Bori Cardo. Mr. Cardo was raised in Charlotte, and graduated from Central High School. He married Margaret Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Alexander, and they enjoyed 60 wonderful years together. A 1941 graduate of The Citadel, Mr. Cardo was a true patriot. He served as an artillery captain in World War II, and for 22 years as an Army Reservist in the 801st Signal Depot Headquarters and the 108th Division. He retired as an Inspector General with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Cardo owned and operated Independent Electric Supply Co., founded by his father, for 30 years. He was a respected and sought after lighting consultant who designed lighting for over 100 churches throughout the Southeast. A devout Catholic and prominent civic leader, Mr. Cardo was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army ARC, and as a member and past president of the Tarheel Chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society. He was an active member of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club, Carmel Country Club, and the Charlotte Senior Forum. He was a proud member of the Central High School Breakfast Club and the Green Gables Gang. A true artisan and craftsman, Mr. Cardo was a gifted woodworker and furniture maker, a talented sculptor and welder, a skilled photographer and painter, an accomplished gardener, and an avid sailor. He was also a loyal Carolina Panthers fan. Mr. Cardo was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who delighted in the companionship of his family. In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by his four children, Jim Cardo, Jr. and his wife, Lynda, Tom Cardo and his wife, Dorothy, Beth Harris, and Nancy Cardo; and his nine grandchildren, James J. Cardo, III and wife, Jennifer, Becca Cardo and fiance, Greg Eddins, Thomas Cardo, Jr., James E. Cardo, Meg Harris, Bess Harris, Jeffery Stanford Cardo, Robert E. Huffman, III, and Nancy Elizabeth Huffman. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Mr. Cardo will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 10, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with the Reverend Edward J. Sheridan, Celebrant. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM on Monday, April 9, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Jim Villier, Dr. James Boyd, and Dr. Robert Fraser to Hospice at Charlotte, especially Jennifer Tuttle. Also to Vance Geriatrics aides: Toby Jordan, Theresa Sanchez, and Rita Bass. We will miss his enthusiasm for life, his wisdom, and his humor.
