LTC James (Jim) Heyward Roberts, Jr., US Army (Ret.), 93, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, in Columbia, SC. Born in Salisbury, NC, on December 18, 1930, Jim led a life marked by dedication to his wife and family, his country, and his community.
Jim attended Carlisle Military Academy followed by Bamberg High School, before earning his degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel, in 1953. He served honorably in the United States Army for 23 years, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, dedicating over two decades to the service of his nation with unwavering commitment and patriotism, to include tours in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Following his military career, Jim transitioned to the corporate world, where he served as the President of Thermal Engineering Corp., in Columbia.
A devout member of North Trenholm Baptist Church for many years, Jim’s faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him guidance and strength. He was also an avid golfer and former member of Spring Valley Country Club, as well as a long-time member of the Ft. Jackson Retired Officer’s Bowling League.
Jim was a loving and caring individual, cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Roberts Kirk, and sons, James Randall (Randy) Roberts and Richard Roberts, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Nellie (Nell) Hoffman Roberts, his loving wife of 65 years.
Jim’s life will be commemorated with a graveside service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, SC at 2 o’clock on Tuesday, October 29th.
His legacy of love, service, and leadership will continue to inspire those who knew him.
