Dr. James “Jim” Edward Kay, 67, husband of Frances “Fran” Tinsley Kay, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at his home. Born in Belton, he was a son of the late Julian Hoyt Kay and Lottie Nelson Kay. Dr. Kay was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the S.C. Medical Association, and the Fortnightly Club. He was an avid historian and especially enjoyed researching genealogy pertaining to his family. He was a graduate of The Citadel and the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a former anesthesiologist at Tuomey Healthcare System for more than 35 years and was currently a physician with the S.C. Department of Corrections. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Steve Kay of Sumter; a daughter, Louise Kay of Sumter; and two sisters, Becky Moorhead of Anderson and Mary Ann Leach and husband, Dan, of Saluda, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mark Durrett officiating. Burial will follow in Belton Cemetery in Belton at 3:30 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fortnightly Club. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to United Ministries of Sumter, 36 S. Artillery Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.
