Colonel James Donald Poteat, age 84 of Conyers, died Thursday, February 28, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Daliah Poteat; and son-in-law, Rev. Scott Emmons. He is survived by his wife, Clara Poteat; son, Don Poteat; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie Emmons, Libby and Jim Frederick, Teri and Joel Morris; grandchildren, Jimmy, Sarah, Kathleen, Tiffany, Lydia, Jeff, Andrew, Austin, Christine, Summer; great-grandchildren, Avery, Emory, Aveda, Arianna, Bethany, Dallas, Boaz, Skye, Adeline and Rory; brother, William ‘Bill’ Poteat; nephew, David Poteat; niece, Donna Poteat. Colonel Poteat graduated with his bachelor’s degree from the Citadel in 1957. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Political Science from Kanas State University and a Diaconal Minister degree from Columbia Seminary. He was a U.S. Army (Ret.) Colonel, a Vietnam Veteran and a Bronze Star recipient. Jim was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church with Rev. Lawrence Lockett officiating; interment will follow at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 3 until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
