James Crawford Turner Jr. of McLean, VA passed away on Saturday, November 25 after a year-long battle with cancer. Jim will be missed for his cheerful spirit and his commitment to his community, his church, his friends, and, most of all, his family.
Born to Mae Norris and James Crawford Turner in Greenville, SC on February 15, 1942, Jim attended the Citadel in Charleston, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. An exceptional Cadet, Jim was a member of the Summerall Guards and was selected in 1964 for the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement Award. Thereafter, he spent 20 years working in the American textile industry as a marketing and international trade executive, before transitioning to a career as a financial advisor in 1990.
Jim was an active participant in the McLean community, as a member of the McLean Planning Committee, McLean Citizens Association, and past president of the McLean Hunt homeowner’s association. He was passionate about the development of a vibrant central McLean and committed considerable time and energy working to better McLean and the surrounding area for the benefit of its citizens.
Jim also gave years of service to local Boy Scout troops, where he combined his lifelong love of the outdoors with his devotion to his sons and other boys who joined in the scouting world. Jim enjoyed nothing more than a tent, campfire cooking, and scout comradery.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marcia E. Miller; his sons James Crawford III, married to Lynn Turner, William Britton, and Richard Graham; his daughter Leslie, married to Andrew Fisher; grandchildren Emily, Noah, and Sarah; and, his brother William Turner and sister Janet Farr. Jim will also be missed by an extended family of nieces, nephews and in-laws who appreciated his enthusiasm for the everyday moments of life.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1545 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, VA, where Jim took great pleasure in welcoming members and visitors as an usher on many Sundays. Memorial donations in memory of Jim may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the charitable organization of your choice.
