Lieutenant Colonel James Bacon King, age 88, of Daphne, Ala., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Thomas Hospital in Daphne, Ala. He graduated from the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Colonel King was stationed in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and his Artillery Battalion was one of the first to fire on the Japanese Zeros as they bombed the island and the battleships in the harbor. After Colonel King retired from the Army, he moved to El Paso, Texas, where he opened several Snelling and Snelling employment agencies. Mr. King’s hobby was writing. At age 87, one of his books was published. Mr. King is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryne and James Burkholder of Daphne, Ala.; daughter, Jamie Bacon King of Anthony, N.M.; son, Henley King of El Paso, Texas; and step-son, Keith Moore of Knoxville; granddaughters, Julie Kimbrough of Alliance, Nebraska; Jana Burkholder of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; grandson, Jeremy Burkholder of Valley Center, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside service and interment will be held at the Bacon Henley Family Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, Rev. Ben Ward officiating.
