Dr. James Burke Berry, Jr., 76, died Monday, January 13, 2003, at his residence in Garden City after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 1 PM from the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Interment will occur at Belin Methodist Church Cemetery at 3:30 PM later that day. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 14, from 6 – 9 PM at Richardson Funeral Home. Dr. Berry was born in Latta, a son of the late James Burke Berry, Sr. and Bonnie Lucille Nichols Berry. He was the first Honor Graduate with a BS from The Citadel, and received a MD from the School of Medicine at Duke University. Dr. Berry performed his internship and residency training in Charleston at the Medical University Complex and at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He came to Marion with the late Dr. Marvin Dibble. The practice was joined by various physicians over the years and is now know as Marion Medical Group. Dr. Berry was the senior physician at Marion Medical Group. He is a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. Dr. Berry has been active in Mental Retardation efforts. He served as Vice President of SC Association for Retarded Children. He was a member of the State Commission of Mental Retardation, a precursor of the Commission on Developmental Disabilities, serving as the first chairman from 1967 to 1978. The Administration Building of the South Carolina Department of Mental Retardation in Florence was named in his honor in 1977. Dr. Berry was a member of the Marion County Board of Education. He is a member of the Marion County Vocational School Board, and was instrumental in starting the school for L.P.N.s. He is a member of the South Carolina Vocational Education Commission. Dr. Berry was a member of the First National Bank Board of Directors. He was a Rotarian, and named Citizen of the Year in 1970.
