Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel James Andrew Bell, 65, of Elizabethtown, Ky., entered eternal rest after battling a seven year journey with colon cancer on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Jim was born in Cherry Point, North Carolina on March 27, 1961 to Francis William Bell and Molly Tarbutton Bell.
Jim was a devoted and loving husband of 43 years to Gwen Stafford Bell. He is survived by his children, Ashley C. Britt (Ryan) of Louisville, KY and James Todd Bell (Sarah) of Elizabethtown, KY; he was blessed with seven grandchildren including Isaiah, Isabelle, and Ivey Britt. As well as Molly, Teddy, Lewis, and Peter Bell. Jim is also survived by his sister, Linda S. Goldsborough (Nicholas).
Jim was a 1983 graduate of The Citadel. He served his country as a veteran of the United States Army including a combat tour during Desert Storm. Jim retired from the U.S. Army in 2005 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years of service. His work continued as a civilian contractor until his passing. His most recent assignment in Identifications was his most honorable as he returned soldiers home to beloved family members. As a Past Conflict Repatriations Branch Specialist, he was able to develop relationships with family members and provide much needed closure and healing. He touched many lives through his kindness, wisdom, and willingness to help others.
Jim was known for living the Citadel creed; faithful, honest, and sincere in every act and purpose. Those who knew Jim will remember his steadfast character, his dedication to his family, and his commitment to his faith and country. Jim will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jim’s family will hold a service honoring his life on Monday, September 28th at 12:30pm at Southeast Christian Church,
600 North Dixie Avenue, Elizabethtown, KY 42701.
Burial with full Military Honors will follow at 2:30pm at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 North Dixie Boulevard, Radcliff, KY 40160.
