James Alexander Barrus, 88, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C. Jim was born on July 26, 1928 in Clinton, N.C. to the late Clifford and Janie Barrus. He attended The Citadel and began his career with Lee Construction Co. Jim retired in 1994 from Heyward Incorporated, where he served on the board of directors.
Jim loved his Lord and Savior and dedicated much of his life to serving in the church. In 1964, he was elected as President of the Assembly Men’s Council of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. He served in three Presbyterian churches as a ruling Elder and most recently was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church for 45 years. During his years at Plantation Estates, Jim volunteered in many capacities to assist in their ministry services.
In 1949, Jim married Betty Earnhardt. They were very happily married for 60 years until her death in 2009. He is survived by his son James A. Barrus, Jr. (Diane) and daughter Beth Barrus Hemby (Steve), and his grandchildren Scott Barrus, Amy Barrus LoParo (Devon), Alyson Hemby Galek (Andy), and Laura Hemby Hanson (Jeremy). Jim was the proud great grandfather of Kylie, Caden, and Beckett Hanson, Nora LoParo, and Caleb, Sofia, and Janey Galek. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Battle Barrus, Jr. and his sister, Frances Barrus Renner.
Jim will best be remembered for his selflessness and generosity beyond measure. He had an immense love for his family and was a faithful friend to many. His presence will be greatly missed.

A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, November 19 at Plantation Estates at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following.
