Jake Whetsell, age 93, of Hockessin, DE passed away Friday, March 30, 2018. He was born on September 8, 1924 in Charleston, SC to the late Henry Whetsell and Bertie (Pye) Whetsell.
Jake earned a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He proudly serviced in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War. Jake went on to work as a civil engineer for DuPont for many years, eventually retiring from Amoco in 1984. Jake enjoyed reading historical nonfiction, political books and biographies. He would often watch sports, specifically Duke, the Orioles, college basketball and March Madness.
Jake is survived by his daughter, Carol Allmond of Newark, DE; son, Charles Whetsell of Irondale, AL; son-in-law, Jack Harmon of Louisburg, NC; three grandchildren: Desiree Shumsky of Wake Forrest, NC, William Allmond of Newark, DE, Matthew Allmond and his wife, Julia Kegelman of Wilmington, DE; five great-grandchildren, and brother, Jack Whetsell and his wife, Genie of Charleston, SC.
In addition to his parents, Jake is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lillian Whetsell, daughter, Mary Harmon, three brothers: Sam Whetsell, David Whetsell and Herbert Whetsell; and two sisters: Daisy Fanning and Jane Greenhill.
A memorial service in Jake’s honor will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may begin visiting at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jake’s honor may be made payable to the “National Kidney Foundation” and sent in care of the funeral home.
