Jackson “Jack” Lewis Sowell, 89, of Lancaster passed away Friday, November 22, 2013 at Lancaster Convalescent Center. He was born March 1, 1924 in Kershaw, a son of the late William Steve and Nancy Henri Young Sowell. He served in the US Army in World War II, after his discharge he returned to the Citadel and graduated in 1947. Jack joined his father in the oil distribution business. He was involved in civic affairs serving as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the United Way and served on the Springs Hospital Board. Jack was a past member of the Lions Club and American Legion and was a devoted and active member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he served as Sr. Warden, and served as Chairman of the Building Committee, Treasurer, and choir member. He loved music and was a member of the Camden Community Concert Band for over 22 years. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Sowell will be held Monday, November 25, 2013 at 12:00 at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Gordon Hamilton officiating. Burial will be private. Mr. Sowell is survived by his wife, Sue Bryant Hite Sowell, of Lancaster; two sons, Jackson Lewis Sowell, Jr. and his wife, Jane of Waxhaw and Stephen Hite Sowell of Belmont, NC; two daughters, Linda Susan Sowell and her husband, Ed of Camden and Sarah Albertin and her husband, Mark of Augusta, GA; a sister-in-law, Camille Hite of Greenville, NC; three grandchildren, Bryant, Jamie and Stephanie; and a number of nieces and nephews.
