Major Jackie T. Phelps (Ret.), age 93 of Carmichael, California passed away on July 4, 2021 after a brief illness. Jack was born and raised in Waycross, Georgia. After graduating from high school he attended The Citadel in South Carolina. Graduating in 1949 with a degree in Chemistry, he was commissioned in the US Air Force. While stationed in Germany, he met the love of his life, Valerie, and married. The USAF took him to many parts of the world: Germany, Kentucky (Fort Campbell), Sacramento (McClellan), Japan (Yokota), Alabama, back to Sacramento, South Korea, and finally Washington (McChord). He piloted C-141 transport jets during the Vietnam War. Upon retiring, Jack moved to Carmichael and worked for the Federal Government as a chemist at McClellan until he fully retired in 1983. Jack had an eclectic taste in music and collected many unique art pieces during their travels. Easy going, he enjoyed sharing a beverage and conversation with friends and neighbors. Jack was preceded in death by his son, Ralph, of Carmichael, his wife Valerie, and his brother, Francis of Ocala, Florida. He is survived by his children John Phelps (Suzanne) of Cobb, California; Teri Vargas (Alex) of Carmichael, California, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
