Jack Holt Black, Sr., 86, of Alcolu, husband of Thelma Burke Black, died Monday, November 4, 2013, in National Healthcare in Sumter. Born July 8, 1927, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Jacob Sidney and Clara Holt Black. He was an Eagle Scout, a lifeguard at Poinsett State Park, a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, a 1949 graduate of The Citadel, where he played the trumpet in the school band as well as for a local jazz band. He had retired as a manager for Westvaco Company and he was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning. He is survived by his wife of Alcolu; a son, Richard Arthur Black (Chieko) of Ponte Vedra, FL; four grandchildren, Jack Holt Black III and George Boyd Black, both of Columbia, Rebecca Ashley Burke Black and Cameron Atticus Black, both of Ponte Vedra, FL. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Holt Black, Jr.; and a sister, Martha Black Welch. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. George Wilkes officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. Robert Lewis Alderman. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at the residence, 2607 Hotel St., Alcolu. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O.
