Dr. James William “Bill” Burch, 76, of Lake City, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2013, in his home after an illness. Dr. Burch was born on March 21, 1937, in Lake City, one of six children of the late Jack Burch and Corrine Floyd Burch. He was a graduate of The Citadel, attended dental school at the Medical College of Virginia and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Dr. Burch practiced dentistry in Lake City for 46 years and was on the Board of Directors at the Lake City State Bank, the Lake City Community Hospital, and the Carolina Academy. In 1998, Dr. Burch became one of the founding members of the Board of Florence County National Bank, which later became SCBT. He continued to serve on the Advisory Board in Florence until his retirement from the board in 2009. He was also a longtime member of the Lake City Study Club, Rotary Club, Florence County Dental Society and Study Club, and the Lake City United Methodist Church. A true lover of nature, Dr. Burch was an avid farmer, outdoorsman and hunter. He proudly holds the state record for the longest spurs on a non-typical bird. Dr. Burch is survived by his beloved daughter, Joy Burch; a granddaughter, Emiliana “Millie” Johanning and her father, Marco Johanning of Costa Rica. Also surviving are a brother, Richard (Betty) Burch of Lake City; and his nieces and nephews including, Lee Ann Fowler Bundrick, Sarah Fowler Braga, Nancy Beaver Byrd, Marion Fowler, Tommy Beaver, Michael Beaver, Ricky Burch and Breck Burch. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Lewis Burch; his brothers, Jackie Burch and Edward Burch; and his sisters, Mary Fowler and Judy Beaver. The family of Dr. Burch will have visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., Thursday, June 27th at Carolina Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 5:00 P.M. Friday, June 28th, at the Lake City United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. Sam Marcengill. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the Lake City United Methodist Church, P. O.
